When Nicole and Mark contacted me about shooting their wedding, reaching out as part of a wedding photography "contest" I advertised last year, I was sold as soon as I read that their wedding would take place at The Kennedy School.
The Kennedy School, part of the McMenamins mini-empire, combines a hotel, movie theater, bar(s), outdoor soaking pool, and event space, all in the former neighborhood elementary school.
The gorgeous exterior is especially striking if you don't expect it as you're driving through the residential neighborhood around the school. The interior's wide hallways, art deco windows, funky murals, and high ceilings make me wish MY elementary school had half the visual warmth and intrigue the Kennedy School must have had when it was an educational facility.
Classrooms are now guest rooms and the former gym is now the event space--and where Nicole and Mark celebrated their marriage. Though summer and early fall weddings are more common for obvious reasons, shooting this wedding in March, especially March in Portland, was incredibly special: the couple lucked out with a day in the upper 60s: sunlight filtered in through the giant gym windows and the first flowers sat expectantly on the surrounding trees, their floral bouquet scenting the air, as we walked around the school taking photos. Congratulations, Nicole and Mark!
