On our third day in Maui, we drove The Road to Hana. Before I visited Maui, I had heard and read repeatedly that one couldn't travel to Maui without driving at least part of this 50 mile road.
I'd heard that even if you were completely put off by the idea of driving on your vacation (like me!), you would miss out on a unique part of the island if you didn't.
We set off on a sunny Friday morning, driving from our home base of Paia to Waianapanapa State Park. We made numerous stops along the way, including a brief, buggy stop in a bamboo forest (40 bites in 5 minutes!), four waterfalls, a banana bread detour, and several pull-off points. Between the hundreds of switchbacks, dense vegetation, numerous waterfalls, and the unspoken friendly spirit that grew among our little inadvertant caravan of cars making similar stops, I'll remember this drive forever.
